like taking a virtual vacation

Check out the Degree Confluence Project. It's a project where people go to the meeting points of the integer values of longitude and latitude degrees, take pictures and write up a little story of their trip to that confluence point. I've been regularly checking out this site, but thought I'd blog it today since I was checking it out. I like it because it turns a number into a landmark and gives a reason to visit even the most remote regions of the planet. It's great to read the stories that people write because it really boils down the idea of knowing where it will end, but wanting to know what it took to get there.

nyc conferences of note

An upcoming conference of interest is the fifth annual HOPE (Hackers on Planet Earth) conference from July 9th to 11th at the Hotel Pennsylvania (across the street from Madison Square Garden) on 33rd St. and 7th Ave. The keynotes will be from Keven Mitnick, Steve Wozniak, and Jello Biafra.

Another interesting conference is the MoCCA (Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art) Art Fest 2004 which takes place this coming saturday and sunday, June 26th and 27th at the Puck Building at 295 Lafayette St.

origami

I found an interesting article on the New York Times site (free reg required) on computational origami. It talks about the crazy origami of David Huffman who also invented Huffman coding for mp3's. Found on Slashdot.

I also found a great site on plain old origami.
