Creativity Now conference notes
I went to the 3rd Annual Creativity Now conference on October 15th. Here are my unorganized notes from the saturday sessions if anybody is interested.
Todd Haynes
Do something that makes you miss the familiar.
Leave your surroundings so that you can express yourself as a product of those surroundings objectively.
The best work comes out at the point where you can't help but do the work.
Director of photography controls film quality and lighting - the lighting is almost exclusively determined by the DP.
Controversy as a means of distribution - making something controversial will expose your work to a larger audience.
The successful creative person manages to distill the essence of the art into the product - director that can make a movie that appeals to the mainstream audience which has a deeper meaning that can be understood by a more sophisticated audience. An experienced chef can express themselves using minimal ingredients to make a sophisticated meal while a less experienced chef might use a greater number of ingredients as a crutch to hide their inexperience.
Documentary Filmmaking
How do you keep it fresh when you've done the same thing over and over? Maybe if the group of people involved in a repetitive task get together, they can make it fresh again.
What happens when art gets out there? It becomes bigger than the art and it becomes the art. The art is no longer what you started with.
Reality show vs.. documentary - staged vs.. edited reality.
Reality of a documentary - If it's not on film it didn't happen.
Audience should decide what the truth is. Don't have a narrator tell what's going on. Let the footage speak for itself.
Aesthetics and Economics of Independent Music
It's not how many records you sell. It's how easy it is for those who want access to the music are give access to that music. If you have X number of fans of an artist or genre and you allow your music to get out to all those people - that's success. It's not determined by albums sales overall or money made.
Videos should not be made for a song unless you think of it as making a film made with that song in mind.
Being an independent distributor and avoiding corporate entanglement is a political statement in itself.
Iconic Advertising
When you have nothing to start with, you have nothing to lose.
Make a regular product into a fashion brand to change people's perceptions of your product. Perception and desire.
Consistency - 1 campaign - 25 years.
Client should only submit 1 page briefs anything more and it means they don't know what they want.
Ad campaign basics - Define problem, Define success, Define media.
Decrease emphasis on competitiveness increase emphasis on creativity
Indifference and inertia.
Surprise is more important that consistency.
Don't bullshit the audience. They're smarter than you think.
Design & Grace
Don't let artists with no design background think they are designers.
Stop perpetuating trend whoring.
Writing comedy
Once you prove yourself in what you do - people will let you do what you want.
If it's not funny for just one person presenting the comedy - chances are it's not going to be funny for the audience.
